From Miss Marshall's Desk

Well the brisk mornings are certainly a hint that the winter months are here.  I am very thankful that the days are still bright and sunny and that the students are still able to have a run around during their break times.    It is very important that if your child is showing any symptoms of the flu that they are kept home to rest and recuperate.  This will hopefully limit the spread of germs in what sounds like it could be a very full on flu season.

Winter Carnival
The Winter Carnival was held last Friday in Moora with the Year 4 – 6 students participating in a range of sports.  Thank you to all of the parents and caregivers who went across to offer support and cheering.  Thank you to the amazing students who had a fabulous day and represented our school in an outstanding fashion.  Also thank you to the staff who went over and spent the day coaching, cheering and rallying everyone. Finally a very big congratulations and thank you to Mr Anderson for the wonderful job he did with organising his first carnival.

NAPLAN

NAPLAN and PAT testing have finally been completed after a number of extensions due to COVID.  PAT results are currently being analysed by staff and NAPLAN results will be released later on in the year.  All students should be extremely proud of their attitude towards sitting the tests and giving each one their best effort.  There has certainly been an amazing change in this aspect over the last couple of years with students now pursuing teachers to find out their results.  Their need to improve and do better is what we are encouraging every day with regular feedback and goal setting.

SDD – School Development Day

On Friday 3rd June the staff will be participating in the School Development Day.  The focus of this day is the upcoming School Review that will occur in 2022 and our Zones of Regulation program.  It is a great opportunity for staff to meet, collaborate and take time to reflect on our practices and progress so far this year.

Monday, 6th June is WA Day Public Holiday.

SIDE Camp

Last week the Year 11 – 12 students from Wongan Hills DHS and Dalwallinu DHS participated in the SIDE (School of Isolated and Distance Education) camp.  This camp enables students to meet with their SIDE teachers to support their learning.  Our students are very fortunate to have this opportunity and greatly appreciated all of the organisation that Mrs Simpson put in to making the week fantastic (even if she did try and burn the place down!)

Cross Country Carnival

The cross country carnival will take place next Friday and the students are all thoroughly excited about this event.  Parents are still required to assist along the track so please email Teena Gordon if you are available.  I can assure you that the timing for this year’s age groups races will be adhered to following feedback from last year.   We look forward to seeing as many spectators as possible to cheer the students along in what will be a great event.

Student Council Colouring In Competiton.

The student council ran a colouring in competition last week for all students to participate in. Judging took place and winners were announced on Monday.
Congratulations to Safira, Ruby and Zoe!

Winter Sports Carnival

On Friday 27th May, our year 4 -6 students participated in the Winter Sports Carnival at Moora Sports Ground.

Students were asked to nominate their preferred sport, choosing form Netball, AFL, Soccer and Hockey. They were then split into teams with other students from Moora PS, St Joseph’s PS, Kalannie PS and Dalwallinu PS, Watheroo PS and Miling PS to play their nominated sport.

Teams then played one another and staff, parents, the local police and other community members helped to coach and umpire throughout the day. Students quickly got to know one another and worked together trying to beat their opponents. Teamwork and sportsmanship were on full display and we were lucky enough to have full sunshine all day.

The organisation behind this carnival is a big effort and WHDHS would like to thank Taryn Harris (Central Midlands SHS) for all her hard work towards this carnival.

We would also like to extend our thanks to all parent volunteers who coached and umpired games throughout the day.

Overall, this carnival was a huge success and all students participated to the best of their ability and upheld The Wongan Way.

There were no prizes for places or winning, however, there were a few gifts for students who were recognised by their coaches for their excellent sportsmanship.

In Art this term, Room One completed a landscapes project exploring colours, lines and patterns. They started by drawing their sunset scene using a mixture of straight, curved and wavy lines to depict the movement of the ocean and the sun’s rays. The students then looked at warm and cool colours, painting both their sky and ocean using a mixture of these colours. The final step to completing the project was to add patterns like spirals, curves or jagged lines into either the ocean or the sky creating some really interest scenes. I’m sure you will agree the end results were sensational!

Room Six this term started with an Andy Warhol inspired Pop Art Piece. After learning about the artist students had to create a piece of artwork demonstrating their understanding of repetition and complimentary colours. They started by drawing a cupcake that they then had to replicate four times creating the tiled effect. Using their knowledge of complimentary colours the students then had to paint and outline their pieces. The end results are very eye catching!

π’œπ“‡π“‰- Upper Primary and Secondary classes

Our Upper Primary and Secondary classes have been producing some amazing art pieces this year. We have a gallery forming in the corridor consisting of our Upper Primary and Secondary Art pieces.

In the below videos you will see the exquisite display of student work. Next time you are in the school we welcome you to come and have a look.

The Year 5 students have used palette knives to produce a painting we are calling Palette-knife Painting. None of the students had used a palette knife before, and the experience was quite different for them. The results are spectacular. Moving on this term the year 5 students experienced using water soluble oil pastels. Stepping away from the paint brushes has been a welcome change for some and a challenge for others. The students have used the medium to create depictions of pumpkins.

The Year 6 students have created a painting of the beach and sea using acrylic paint on timber boards. The primary focus of the work has been to develop the skill of blending colours.

The Year 8 Visual Art students have had a choice of producing an art piece using acrylic paint on paper. The choice was stones/pebbles or a bunch of grapes. The two options use similar techniques to create an appearance of curved or rounded shapes and bring a three dimensial quality to the work.

The Year 9 and 10 students have also been using the acrylic paints producing paintings of Alien Landscapes. The students were asked to collaborate on a theme for a painting that wold allow them to develop their skills in brushwork, creating form and tone.

This year in Home Economics students have been focusing on types of dough and desserts. Students have learned to make shortcrust pastry and how to use puff pastry in many sweet and savoury ways. Soups, quick and easy meals, risotto, pasta bakes and many other dishes have been trialled in Daily Meals.

Textiles have allowed students to create interesting and innovative projects such as patchwork cushions, donut cushions, mermaids, monsters, cord cases, beanies and dog coats to name just a few!

Flexible Furniture

Flexible Learning Spaces

Last week we received the fourth delivery of our Flexible Learning Spaces furniture for Rooms 6 and 7.  The students spent the afternoon arranging their classroom to best suit their needs, enjoying all of the new and exciting colours and seating options.  Thank you to the P and C who have contributed funds towards this initiative.  We now have 6 completed rooms with new quotes for the secondary English, Maths and HASS rooms to be submitted to the finance committee shortly.  The students love the flexibility this furniture brings to the classrooms and their learning.
