From the Principal's Desk

Our school has had its first COVID positive result, which was not unexpected.  We are currently working with families and have a number of students isolating for being a close contact.  Thank you for the parents support with this as I believe we will see more cases in our community and our school.  A note went home yesterday with information for parents/guardians from the Department of Health which I hope was helpful at this time.  All queries about COVID will be directed through the front office to me so that there is only one source of information from the school.

Students with exemptions in regards to wearig masks will need to provide medical evidence to the front office. All medical exemptions are handled by myself and information is passed onto staff as appropriate.

All students in years 3 to 12 are required to bring a mask to school. Parents and students should not expect that the school supplies these.  We do have a limited number of masks that are here for students as an emergency.  Please support the school by making sure that your child goes to school with their mask in the morning.

Swimming Carnivals

The Interhouse Swimming Carnival for our Year 4-12 students will take place this Friday 11th March. Due to COVID we are only having students who are swimming in events attending.  Also staff and parent helpers who are attending have specific roles to support the running of the carnival.  We currently are unable to have spectators this year which is unfortunate.  It will be school as normal for all other students so attendance is required and expected.

OLNA (Online Literacy and Numeracy Assessment)

OLNA is designed to enable students to successfully meet the Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE) requirement of demonstrating the minimum standard of literacy and numeracy. These are the skills regarded as essential to meet the demands of everyday life and work. Students who have achieved Band 8 or higher in reading, writing and numeracy in their Year 9 NAPLAN are not required to sit the assessment in the corresponding OLNA component. All other students in Years 10, 11 and 12 who have not yet met the OLNA requirements must sit the assessments. Testing was undertaken last week for Writng and Reading. Numeracy testig will be administered next week.

NAPLAN 2022

The NAPLAN school practice test window will be March 24th to April 8th for students to be able to practice the NAPLAN testing platform.  NAPLAN testing for 2022 in years 3, 5, 7 and 9 will be online except for year 3 writing which will still be of a paper type.  The testing will be from May 10th to May 20th with the first 3 days schools must prioritise the completion of Writing and Reading.

It is strongly recommended that all students participate in the testing as the results provide a snapshot of a student’s achievement in comparison to all students of the same year level across the country. The results also support the school to identify strengths and weaknesses in teaching programs and assist in identifying targeted areas for improvement.

Photo Day

School photos will be taking place next Thursday, 17th March. Photo Envelopes have been sent home with students to allow parents to order school photos and must be returned with students on Thursday, 17th March. Sibling photo envelopes are available from the front office. You can email Miss Amy at amy.carragher@educaiton.wa.edu.au and request and envelope to be sent home with your child/ren.

Student Update Forms and Cosent Forms

Student Update Forms and Consent Forms were due back on Friday, 4th March. If you have not reuturned your child/ren's Student Update Forms please return the forms to the front office. It is vital the student information kept on the school system is kept up to date. We appreciate your support in keeping all student information up to date.

Year 7 and 10 Immunisations

Year 7 and 10 students were sent home Immunisation permission forms last week, please endeavour to return them to the front office at your earliest convenienece. Immunisations will take place in Term 2.

Kindy

Welcome to the new Kindy children of 2022. They have settled in well to their first year of school.

We have been doing many learning experiences involving listening and speaking and discovery play in the classroom and outside. Last week we went outside to listen and find things starting with the /s/ sound.

Each Friday we have Food experiences where the children make and eat their own food.

Room 3

So far students have shown great initiative with our talk for writing approach to improving our overall literacy skills. As you can see pictured, this is the process we have followed for our writing. Firstly, student work either individually, in small groups, or pairs to create a picture map that helps them comprehend the text. Secondly, we use a box planner to break down which parts of the text we can personalise. Finally, we transfer our newly found skills to our writing books.

In health we have been finding out what kind of foods we should include in our lunchboxes and also foods we should limit. Students used magazines to search for healthy foods that we have been learning about the last couple of weeks. They have created these posters and worked in an extremely productive and collaborative manner throughout the lesson.
