What is Work Place Learning (WPL)?
Work Place Learning is a Curriculum Council Course of Study that all Year Eleven and Twelve students participate in if they are studying a VET course. Work Place Learning contributes to the students Western Australian Certificate of Education (W.A.C.E.). This is an essential part of our Senior School Integrated Engagement Program.
It is ‘on-the-job’ training that prepares the student for the workforce. Students are expected to perform hands on tasks in the workplace that are related to the competencies they are learning in their VET course. WPL is like any other class and a grade is given at the end of each semester. The grade is made up as follows; 60% for ‘on the job’ training and satisfactory completion of a log book and 40% for a school based theory programme.
Students participate in WPL two days a week (Thursday and Friday) and days spent in the workplace constitute normal school days. These days are non-negotiable as other WACE delivery occurs face-to-face on Mon-Weds.
If a student is sick, or unable to attend for any reason, the student must notify the employer and the school. Students complete a log book detailing the competencies they learn and the hours they work. A Curriculum Council requirement is that this must be kept up-to-date and handed in to the WPL Co-ordinator each week for marking. The leader of the WPL team will visit a student in the workplace at least once each semester and will also keep in regular contact by phone.
In special circumstances, students may apply to commence WPL in Year 10. This will give them WACE accreditation as the requirements above are still the same.
How can I help my child prepare for the placement?
